I have a birthday coming up and that’s not a good thing when it coincides – every year – with a new year. Birthday plus new year equals a great feeling for a need for change and a whopper of a personal report card on the year that has passed. The hits and misses real or imagined of 2010 become very big indeed. This is the time of year I start making lists about things I’m going to change or fix or start afresh. I’ve started a list for next year and I have written down a Vietnamese cooking course. For me, that just proves how fanciful these lists can be. Notice I say lists and not me!
One thing I have done is stopped my column in the SMH. The last one is tomorrow. I was starting to find it hard to think of an idea and that is when it is time to go. I’m opening the doors wide for 2011, clearing out the joint, making lists that I end up putting near the kettle until the pen bleeds blue from the spilt water, and starting a new novel. Who knows?
What I do know is that my first novel, Under The Influence, published by Random House is due out next April. It’s about three women who went to boarding school together and share a secret. It’s about infatuation and friendship and what we do to be loved and power.
April. Next year. OMG.
